Closing a Venmo account is crucial to prevent theft and fraud because it is linked to a bank account. You will want to do this before closing the deceased’s bank accounts.

The Venmo account may have money left in it. If so, transfer it to a bank account, ideally the estate account you’ve established for this purpose.

1) If you have access to the deceased person’s phone, transfer assets this way:

  • Click on the Venmo app.
  • Click on the 3 horizontal lines in the upper left corner.
  • Click “Transfer to Bank.”
  • Click Next and choose the bank account.

2) Use a computer to close the account by clicking “Close my account” at the bottom of the page at this link

3) If you don’t know how to log into the account, but have access to the associated email or phone number, you can reset the password and then follow the above steps to transfer remaining money and close the account:

  • Click this link: https://venmo.com/account/password-reset.
  • Enter the email address or phone number associated with the Venmo account.
  • In the email inbox or messages, tap or click the link that was emailed or texted.
  • Create a new password (between 8 and 32 characters long) and log in.

4) If you don’t have any access, you can call Venmo at 1-855-812-4430
