After a loved one’s passing, you may need to deal with items such as driver’s licenses, license plates, and disabled person placards that have specific rules governing how they are discarded. Because some of these items can be used toward identity theft, it is important you follow these rules.

Driver’s License

Kansas DMVs require an obituary or death certificate to be sent for the license holder, and will update the license accordingly.

Disabled Person Placard (Handicap Placard) / License Plates

The handicap placard and license plates can be surrendered according to the county. Contact your local county treasurer’s office for more information. The County Treasurers Association County Directory can help locate your local county treasurer’s office as well as the services available and phone numbers to call for services, according to your vicinity.
