After a loved one’s passing, you may need to deal with items such as driver’s licenses, license plates, and handicap placards that have specific rules governing how they are discarded. Because some of these items can be used toward identity theft, it is important you follow these rules.

Driver’s License

The driver’s license can be returned to driver’s services at the following address:

Iowa DOT

Attn: Driver Services

PO Box 9204

Des Moines Ia 50306

Disabled Person Placard (Handicap Placard)

The numbers from the handicap placards can be sent to the following email, and they will be marked out of the system:

[email protected]

License Plates

The license plates can be sent back to the county treasurer’s office for a refund if available and disposal of the plates. Once returned, the office will mark the vehicle as no longer in the name of the deceased.
