After a loved one’s passing, you may need to deal with items such as driver’s licenses, license plates, and handicap placards that have specific rules governing how they are discarded. Because some of these items can be used toward identity theft, it is important you follow these rules.

The Indiana BMV does not require items (Driver’s License, Disabled Person Placard, License Plates) to be turned in. The Indiana department of health will report the deceased to the BMV and they will mark the file as such.

For more information, contact the BMV response team at

100 N Senate Avenue, Room N400, Indianapolis, IN 46204
