If the death was unexpected, traumatic, suspicious, or the cause of death is not known, an autopsy may be required.

Depending on the state where the death occurred and how it happened, the doctor may ask you if you want an autopsy, or it may be mandatory. There are a few things you may want to consider:

• If your religion or culture objects to autopsies, tell the doctor.
• If there is an autopsy, you can still have an open casket funeral, because the physical signs of an autopsy are usually hidden by clothing.
• A family member may need to sign an authorization form.
• You may be charged for transportation of the body, or the state may pay.

If an autopsy is needed, the body will be taken to the coroner’s office. After the autopsy is completed, the body will be released.
