You need to continue making regular car payments, maintain vehicle registration, and then transfer the car’s ownership. You cannot drive the car unless you have proper registration, and penalties will be charged if this is not done on time.

1) Sign the vehicle over to yourself on the back of the title

2) Gather:

  • Completed title
  • Death certificate
  • Notarized Affidavit for Collection of Personal Property of the Decedent form – Form 3C-E-312 : https://www.courts.state.hi.us/docs/form/hawaii/3CE312.pdf
  • Proof of auto insurance
  • Your current and valid registration certificate
  • Proof of passing a safety inspection

3) Bring the documents to the registration office.
