Active duty service members all have life insurance. (The unit should be of assistance in finding out more.) Veterans may also have life insurance through the VA.
If the deceased is still on active duty, reserve, or national guard, the claim will be processed by the unit
- A casualty assistance officer will be appointed and will fill out the paperwork for you

If the veteran is not on active service/has already separated, call 1-800-419-1473 to confirm coverage
- They will ask for your control number which can be found on your statement
- They will take your information
- The claims department will reach out
- You will likely need to fill out this form
