In order to continue to protect the residence in case of damage (e.g. a storm or fire) or a claim of an injury on the property, you will need to switch the homeowner’s or renter’s insurance over if someone is keeping the house or apartment. You usually have 30 days to do this.

Here are the steps for making a change:

1. Find your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy

2. Call the number listed on the policy (or the customer service number below for the relevant company) and ask to be listed as the “named insured”:

  • Allstate: 1-877-810-2920
  • American Family: 1-800-692-6326
  • Citizens Property Insurance Corp: 1-866-411-2742
  • Chubb Group: https://www.chubb.com/us-en/contact-us/
  • Farmers: 1-888-327-6335
  • Liberty Mutual: 1-800-921-2335
  • Nationwide: 1-877-669-6877
  • State Farm: 1-800-SF-CLAIM
  • Travelers: 1-800-842-5075
  • USAA: 210-531-USAA
